We know that the heart will try to deceive us every time, and lead us to sin. The heart by itself is prone to disobedience and loves to wander away from the will of God. But you must learn how to tame the heart and honor God with your life.
Your life can only find its true meaning and purpose when you know the saving grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The heart is deceitful and wicked so there is no need to follow it because there is a strong possibility it will lead you away from Christ. By nature the heart of man is wicked. This is because of the sin that started with Adam and Eve.
It’s a difficult task to convince the heart that what it wants is the goodness of God and not the evil ways of sin. But the good thing is that we can train our hearts to focus on and love the things of God. You might be wondering, what does the heart have to do with honoring God? Everything. The heart is the epicenter of all activities that will lead to a life of honor.
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”
Luke 6:45 KJV
Jesus is the bridge
Jesus is the strong bridge between man and God. Now there is no more gap, fallen man has been restored to right standing with God. Hallelujah!!!
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Jeremiah 17:9 KJV
As Christians, we should follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and stay away from all types of sin. Our lives should represent God, people should see God living in us. We are God’s representative on this earth, and the goal is to lead others to Jesus. Here are some guidelines on how to live a life that honors God:
Do not conform and honor God with your life
We should choose not to conform to the world but follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. As the Holy Spirit leads us, we must allow him to work in and through us to transform us into his likeness. This requires total surrender by offering our lives as a living sacrifice. It is only then that we will come to know what is the good and perfect will of God for our lives. Here at the place of transformation is where we will receive the best of what God has in store for us.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2 KJV
Romans 12:2 KJV
Grow in your faith and honor God with your life
As Christians, we should be growing in our faith. Our faith in God is what will change our life, and the world around us. It’s not wise to be a lone ranger in this Christian walk. If you are alone, who will help you to get up if you fall? We all need to surround ourselves with like-minded people who will encourage us and help us carry our cross on these rough terrains of life’s journey. Find good Christian friends if you don’t have any, find a Church, and go look for some. Build close relationships with people who will help to strengthen your faith and push you to become your best.
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6 KJV
You might have to leave some people behind and disassociate yourself from those that are pulling you away from Christ. Growth sometimes means letting go and moving on. If we want to get closer to God, then we have to spend quality time in his presence.
Renew your mind to the things of Christ
Paul makes it clear in Philippians 4:8 that we should only set our minds on holy things. We need to think about good things and get our minds out of the gutter. No good thing is in the gutter but muddy water and filthy waste.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Philippians 4:8 KJV
We have concluded that the heart is deceitful so how can it be changed? Only by the power and grace of almighty God. We just need to ask God to daily renew our minds and create in us a clean heart, and also do our part to not allow any evil weeds to grow and corrupt our clean, renewed hearts and minds.
Even when we try to live a life that honors God by our own strength we fail. The devil is out to get us, he seems to hit us harder as Christians to try and get us to fall, become discouraged, and eventually give up on Christ. The only way to live a life that honors God is not to follow our heart but to stay rooted and grounded in his word and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Be serious about your spiritual growth, and change your perspective. Climb higher in the things of Christ.
Jesus is your example
We should strive to be more like Jesus. But before we can do so we need to know who Jesus is. Once we know him, he will give us the grace to live a life that honors God. This does not mean that we will always be in constant victory. We might fail and fall prey to sin and Satan’s tricks. But we know that God’s grace is sufficient and he will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness if we run to Him with a penitent heart. If you feel unclean then run to Jesus and cry:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalms 51:10 KJV
Jesus lives in you, so don’t run from the battle you will get to the other side with a testimony and you will give God the glory. Jesus bore his cross and carried our sins and even though we have to carry our own cross on this earth, he is willing, ready, and able to help us bear ours.
Put God first and honor God with your life
The flesh is weak and every day we battle emotions such as self-pity, anger jealousy, fear, lust, and the works. But we have the help of the Holy Spirit to overcome them all. Submit to him and he will help you. What is slowing you down? Is it the cares of the world? Let them go and put God first, cast down every idol that you have erected in your life.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33 KJV
What else is there, the purpose of man is to see God and walk humbly with him. And as much as possible try to live in peace with all men. It doesn’t pay to run after worldly things and lose our soul in the end, so seek first the kingdom.
Most time we do not see God as our first solution when we are facing our storms, we run and seek shelter in the arms of those who we think can help us, but God should be our first choice. He is the shelter from every storm and even if he doesn’t shelter you he will help you through it or carry you above your storms. Hold on to him.
“Thou shalt have none other gods before me.”
Deuteronomy 5:7 KJV
Don’t worry and fret about things you cannot fix, turn it over to the God who specializes in impossible things.
Trust in God
When it seems like you cannot make it. Run into the arms of the father. His arms are open wide to receive you. Stay under the shelter of the almighty God. He will help you through it. He knows what you can handle and he will never put more on you than you can bear. God always knows what is best for us and he wants to give us his best so we should trust him and wait on his perfect timing. Our hearts might lead us astray but if we put our complete trust in God, he will lead us on the right path.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5 KJV
God will help you to live a life that is holy and pleasing in his sight, remember, it’s not by might nor by power but by his spirit.
Prayer to live a life that honors God
Dear heavenly Father, I come to you in Jesus’ name. Lord, please help me to live a life that is pleasing to you. Lord, I humbly bow before your throne in total surrender to you. Father help me to love like you and let my actions and words honor you now and always. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
